This End Up, Classic Queen Platform Bed, Finishing (Part III)

After letting the second coat of MinWax Antique Oil Finish dry for around fifteen hours it looked like this:

We then buffed a lot with Homax #4/0 (0000) Steel Wool Pads until it was nice and shiny. We also wiped off the metallic dust from the steel wool with cheese cloth:

Time to assemble.
Drawer housing and base end boards, we used galvanized deck screws:

Added the cross boards and brackets:

View of the finished drawers:

Side rails, headboard, and foot rail all connected:

Completed project:

I'd say it looks a lot better than the unfinished pine it started out as.

  1. I am thinking about buying one of the bed from them. How was the quality of bed.

    1. When assembled the platform and construction itself is quite solid.
During assembly and disassembly the three pieces of wood that lay across the drawer sections are a point of frustration.

The drawer sections are covered in a very thin piece of plywood on top to which you are supposed to anchor the boards that the side rails attach to and that support the head and foot board. Being so thin it is all too easy to damage the hole through which the board anchors. This sometimes means you have to pull up the board without removing the screw first.

We plan to reinforce this section with a few pieces of wood that will not interfere with the drawers but will give the screws something to bite into.

Also, it should be noted that the three cross boards (that support the side rails, that have the brackets on top) are really low quality. This is not a big deal in terms of sleep or comfort as they are covered by the large plywood sheets. This is a problem on disassembly for moving as they proved rather easy to splinter and bulge when removing screws.

Lastly, results and comfort are highly subjective.
I use an Ikea Malfors mattress because I want something rather thin on a hard platform. You might want something else, and I can't speak to any other mattress combination.

Overall though, when assembled, it is solid and quite satisfactory. The process of assembly and disassembly could be better though by a more robust drawer section and better quality cross boards.
